Glossary

Maisonette

A Leasehold property which generally has it's own front door leading onto the footpath outside, unlike apartments which have communal entrance halls

Management Company

If a building has some common (or communal) areas, such as found in a block of flats, quite often a Landlord will employ a Management Company to maintain them.

Management Company Share

Sometimes a tenant in a leasehold property can buy a share in the management company.

Matrimonial Home Rights

A husband, wife or civil partner may have rights to stay in a property even if they are not the legal owner but the house has been or is to be sold. It is quite a complicated matter and is used when these marriages or partnerships are breaking up.

Memorandum of Sale

This can also be known as the Sales Particulars or Notification of Sale. It is the document which confirms the fact that the seller and buyer have agreed to the property transactions.

Provision of a mix of complementary uses, such as residential, community and leisure uses, on a site or within a particular area.

Mortgage

This is the money lent to a buyer to purchase a house.

Mortgage Offer

This is when a lender makes an official offer in writing to provide a mortgage.

Mortgage Valuation

Quite often a mortgage lender will insist that a property is inspected by a qualified surveyor to ensure the property is worth the value the purchaser has declared it to be. This is known as a Mortgage Valuation.
